Why Are Pens Still Popular?

A pen, derived from the Latin word pinna meaning feather, is a tapered, slim and circular apparatus utilized for the application of ink on writing surfaces such as paper. There are many types of pens available in the market today, such as the very-famous ballpoint pen which gives out sticky oil-based ink by the motion of an undulating small hard sphere, a roller ball pen which allots a water-based liquid or gel ink through a round tip very much like a ballpoint pen, and the eponymous fountain pen, which utilizes a nib to deliver ink which is water based. As the world evolves, technology has advanced to such astonishing levels that we are constantly in awe of so much progress made in such a short span of time. Once upon a time, the pen is considered the only writing instrument we will ever need, but then came the invention of the mighty computer, with its many facets to make writing an absolute breeze. To be fair, working and writing on a computer can assist many people to get their work done in a jiffy as compared to writing with plastic pens. An educator would always encourage his students, and attempt to arouse an interest in writing with the help of a computer. It is much simpler to hit keys on a keyboard than it is to grasp a plastic pen and write on a piece of visible paper. Compared with conventional pen and paper, many of us would have a preference to transmit our words and thoughts on ‘magic paper’ i.e. a keyboard. To sum it up, working on computers can allay bodily, mental and one’s thought process limitations to a certain scale. As a direct consequence, writing becomes more enjoyable, thrilling and simpler, and no longer considered a reprimand. Using a computer may also inspire creativity, investigation of schemes and the assessment and reviews of those schemes in the target subjects. Much singing praise has been lauded for the computer, so why are we still using plastic pens as writing instruments? Why do we still keep notebooks (actual ones comprising a cover and blank paper) in our bags? Why is the plastic pen still an essential item for many of us? The answers may be quite abstract, as in that they differ from one individual to another. But the most common and acceptable ones may be that writing using plastic pens on paper requires full concentration, and there can be no distraction. By comparison, a computer has many distractions; the moment you are bored, you’d switch to a new window and hours would go by before realizing that the initial work to be done has been ignored. Pen and paper would never let that happen, as it’s a process which has a beginning to an end, with no stopping in between. What if you have a sudden epiphany and had to write it down immediately – would you not reach into your bag, fish for a plastic pen, a scrap of paper and begin furiously writing your thoughts down? By the time you access your lap top, those thoughts would have become like dust in the wind. Even with the advent of computer technology, many certified secretaries working for large Companies still prefer to take shorthand utilizing a note pad and a plastic pen. There is an inexplicably intangible quality about writing with the hand using an actual pen, something that makes it infinitely invaluable; especially when the muse visits at odd hours of the morning. Pens, whether plastic ones or metal, will be permanent facets in our lives; all the true literary classics were written using a pen of some sort, and just cannot be compared to the modern computer.
