Repairing a trout fishing guide is not all that hard when a person knows what they are doing. It is not necessary to throw away a rod every time something breaks on it. There are some simple things you can do to repair a trusty fishing rod.
You will need a box cutter or sharp razor blade, fishing rod thread, epoxy, new guide and a lighter.
Repairing the Fishing Guide
There will come a time when a rod guide will come loose or break. Do not panic, this is fixable. The first thing to do is remove the guide from the rod. Since guides come attached to the rod with thread and a bit of epoxy, they are easily removed. Epoxy becomes soft with heat, take the lighter and heat the box cutter blade or razor. Heating the blade makes it easier to cut through the old epoxy and thread.
Take your new guide, place it on the rod and start to wrap it with new thread. Once the guide is secure, take a bit of epoxy and spread it over the thread. It takes a bit of time to set, yet after a few minutes a strong bond will take hold.
Once the epoxy foundation has dried, take the rod and apply a thicker second coat of epoxy. This will seal the fishing guide and thread. This also helps to keep water from getting under the guide and causing more problems.
This is simple to do and will save you lots of money. Doing the job yourself keeps your rod out of the shop and in your hands where it is most effective. You can basically find any part for your gear at a sport fishing shop. If it can’t be found there, ask the salesperson to direct you to the nearest sporting goods store.
