Fishing Rod Types – Tips To Choose The Right One

Once you have decided to pursue a hobby of fishing you must do some research into the techniques of fishing and the equipment that is available in the market. To begin with you must determine which kind of fishing rod is best suited for your needs.

There are basically two types of fishing rods among the many available to choose form. These are the detachable rod and the single piece fishing rod.

In the beginning the fishing rods were made from single bamboo or cane pieces that rarely exceeded 12 feet. The more popular fishing rods were 6 feet to 9 feet long. The 12 foot fishing rod facilitated fishermen to reach way out over the water from the side of the lake or river. Shorter rods required one to find a branch that extended over the water in order to reach out to the middle.

As time went by the bamboo rods were refined and the rods were made by fusing three strips of cane or bamboo together with some glue and binding them together with string to produce strength and flexibility. Then in recent times these rods gave way to the modern fiber glass fishing rod that has grown into the most popular fishing rod.

Modern day fishing rods can be dismantled quite easily and quickly into three or more parts to facilitate storage in small areas and are easy to transport as well. These rods are very durable and offer many conveniences to the angler such as easily attaching a different spool along with the appropriate line in just a few minutes. There is no need to carry many fishing rods for different types of fish. One rod can accommodate different fishing techniques and equipment and the length of the rod itself can be easily and quickly adjusted too.

It is best to choose a fiber glass fishing rod when you go out to purchase a rod for yourself. These rods require no maintenance and are very durable. They are suited to all weather conditions. The handles of these rods can be interchanged and they can accommodate fishing reel and tackle for all types of fish.

Fiber glass fishing rods can be either solid or hollow; both are equally durable and attractive to. So, when choosing your fishing rod you must look for a certain amount of flexibility, you do not want the rod to bend excessively nor do you want it to be too rigid. It must also not be made of very brittle material or it will snap under the weight of a large fish.
Your local sports store will be able to advise you on your first purchase, then your experience will guide you further. So get yourself a fishing rod and let nature teach you the rest.

A Fishing Rod is not as Simple as Many Believe

A fishing pole is a simple pole made out of carbon fibre, graphite, or fiberglass. These poles have a fishing line attached to the tip of the pole and a hook is attached to the fishing line. The hook can use either a lure or bait to catch fish. A fishing rod contains a casting reel and fishing guides on the rod to thread the fishing line and guide it during the casting and reeling in of fish. Therefore, a fishing rod is much more sophisticated than a fishing pole.

Many different types of fishing rods exist and each should be evaluated before one is selected. A fishing rod is designed based on the type of fishing. For example, some people fish just for a hobby in a local pond, others try to catch freshwater fish, and still others seek large fish in deep sea waters. Each of these types of fishing requires a particular design style of rod and is not interchangeable.

A fly fishing rod is a popular rod choice and is used in fly fishing. This rod is thin and very flexible and designed to cast an artificial fly which is usually very lightweight. Each fly rod is further designed based on the type of fish one desires to catch as well as the type of water one will fish in.

Another popular type of fishing rod is the sea rod. This rod is very thick and sturdy because it is designed to catch very large species of fish. Sea rods are very long and again designed for particular types of fish which include marlin and shark. These fishing rods are primarily used in deep sea fishing.

A surf fishing rod is another type of rod used in the sea or ocean. This rod is used while standing along the beach. Since the fisherman must cast past the breaking water, this fishing rod is quite long and is designed to cast using two hands.

A fishing rod is a necessary tool of fishing and should be selected based on the type of fishing one will be participating in as well as the type of fish. Each rod is very specialized and not as simple as once believed.

Fishing: How to Choose the Right Fishing Rod

There are many ways to catch fish. A fisherman can surely catch fish with his hands. He can catch fish with a spear. He could even cast a net over a school of fish, however awkward it may be at first. All of these methods can be effective with practice but they offer the same disadvantage to the fisherman: the catch is restricted to only shallow water varieties of fish.

On the other hand, many believe that it is the fishing rod that is the fisherman’s most basic, most important weapon. With a fishing rod, your chances of getting a good catch are very much improved.

When it comes to game fishing, that is, fishing for large, offshore fish, a fishing rod is a necessity. You just can’t do without it.

If you’re new at fishing, a fishing rod will be your main investment. It is the one, essential tool that makes most fishing possible and enjoyable. Oftentimes, just manipulating a fishing rod can become addictive for many people.

Here are some guidelines that will help you select the right fishing rod for your needs.

▪ Shape. A fishing rod should taper off from its base to its tip. You won’t have problems with finding a fishing rod that satisfies this shape. It’s quite widespread, practically universal. Advanced designs are introduced to the market every now and then, but the classic and traditional is still the best and finest choice.

▪ Weight. A fishing rod is described by weight. This weight doesn’t refer to the actual heaviness of the rod. Rather, this refers to how resilient the rod will be for specific types of lures and for specific types of fish. Therefore, classifications like Ultra-Light, Light, Medium-Light, Medium, Medium-Heavy, Heavy, and Ultra-Heavy are used when describing fishing rods or fishing poles to help the fisherman in choosing the correct one for his objectives.

Fly fishing, for instance, can be managed with Ultra-Light to Medium weight rods. Bass fishing, on the other hand, would require Medium-Light to Heavy weight rods.

▪ Action. A fishing rod is also described by action. Action refers to how much the fishing rod can bend when pulled by a particular force, and how fast it will revert to its neutral position when the force is removed. Action is categorized as slow, medium or fast, although middle-points between levels can be found.

▪ One-piece or Two-piece. Some fishing rods are labeled as one-piece, because they come in, well, one piece. They are said to feel very natural for the fisherman, allowing for a more comfortable and relaxing time.

On the other hand, two-piece fishing rods are, of course, more complicated. But with the proper engineering, these rods can achieve their goals effectively well. However, you’ll need to take special care when selecting a two-piece rod. If it’s ineptly manufactured, it could be disastrous even for experienced fishermen.

When the time comes for you to choose a fishing rod, you really need to know about the fish you intend to catch. Some fish take a few minutes to catch, while others can take many long hours. Knowing this will dictate what kind of fishing rod you’ll need. There’ll be no room for guesswork and you’ll have the best fishing rod possible. Good luck!

What kind of fishing rod and reel should I buy?

I’m in New England and I’m looking to get into salt water pier fishing. I haven’t fished since I was about 8 years old w/ my dad (I’m 26 now) so I basically have zero experience and I’m a total beginner. I have no idea what type of rod and reel I should purchase to do this type of fishing. If anyone can give me some advice it will help a lot because I have no clue where to start.

Hey Freak-
I suggest going to a local tackle shop and asking them lots of questions. If they’re nice and seem honest to you, then buy your stuff there, based on their recommendations, furthermore, when you end up on that pier enjoying your day, look around at who’s catching the species you are interested in, and make sure you are set up similarly, which you should be, if the tackle shop owner set you up right.
